The Washington Quarter has been minted from 1932 to the present with several design changes over the years. First minted to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Washington and designed by John Flanagan, a noted sculptor of his day. Issued as Silver coinage from 1932 to 1964, the mint changed over to clad coinage in 1965 to the present. In addition the U.S. mint issued State Quarters, five per year from 1999-2008 for each of the fifty states. Subsequently, in 2009 the mint released District of Columbia and U.S. Territories set consisting of six coins. Starting in 2010 and scheduled to run until 2021 the Washington Quarters are being issued in the America the Beautiful series. These coins honor sites with ?natural or historic significance?.
