A couple weeks ago we talked about the Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle. In that article we mentioned the Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, and here it is!
Considered by many to be the most beautiful U.S. coin, it was first minted in 1907 and ran until 1933. This coin, like the Liberty Head is made up of 90% gold and 10% copper
The coin is named after its designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens who was given the job to beautify American currency in 1904 by then president, Theodore Roosevelt.
The task however proved to be difficult largely due to the fact that Sait-Gaudens was in poor health and there were many issues with the design of the coin.
The obverse of the coin predominantly features a depiction of Liberty walking forward holding an olive branch and a torch surronded by sun rays and encircled by 46 stars. with the word “LIBERTY” over her head.
The reverse features a flying eagle over the sun which is outlined with the words, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Over the eagle it says, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
This particular coin is a 1922 and has a grade of MS 65.
