Bright semi PL luster with few hairlines and slight rubbing on the hair over the ear. First attributed in 1913 by Howard Newcomb (of large cent fame), it was forgotten until the 1960’s when silver dollar collectors started distinguishing the reverses of this date. Uncirculated specimens were unknown until 1967.
The Redfield hoard was the first known significant number of this variety with an estimated 3,000 coins,
most of them uncirculated. Experts estimate a possible mintage of less than 500,000.
