First attributed in 1913 by Howard Newcomb (of large cent fame),
it was forgotten until the 1960’s when silver dollar collectors started distinguishing the reverses of this date.
Uncirculated specimens were unknown until 1967.
The Redfield hoard was the first known significant number of this variety with an estimated 3,000 coins,
most of them uncirculated. Experts estimate a possible mintage of less than 500,000. This one has moderate wear wit a nice gray color, one of the more difficult sub-varieties of this issue which has gained in popularity, and subsequently price, in the past year. NGC Cert# 4756565-001
