In 1834, the value of the gold in the half eagle was more valuable than its face value for years. The Congressional Act of June 28, 1834 called for a reduction in the gold used. The weight of the coin was changed to 8.36 grams, the diameter changed to 22.5 mm, and the composition of gold to .8992 gold and .1008 silver and copper. The new obverse, called the “Classic Head” was designed by William Kneass. This example is Slabbled with NGC number 3453084-001 and is a scarce to rare variety
