Peridot is the birthstone of August. It is a brilliant lime green color, but the origins of the name periot are unclear. Many experts believe it comes from either the Greek word “peridona” meaning giving plenty, or the Arabic word “Faridot” meaning gem. Either of these origins could be why the peridot is often associated with good fortune and prosperity.
Peridots beautiful bright green color comes from the compisition of the mineral, which is why it is always green and not a variety of colors like most gemtones whose color come from trace impurities.
This also makes the stone particulary rare variety of the mineral olivine.
Most peridots are mined fro the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona, but has also been found in meteorites.
