This weeks article is about the Three-cent piece.
The Three-cent piece was a tiny little coin minted from 1851 to 1889. Initially this coin was made from silver, but later, in 1865, the coin material used changed from silver to nickel.
The initial design of this coin featured a shield displayed on a six pointed star on the obverse, and the Roman numeral III on the reverse.
Sometimes called the trime, these coins were the smallest coins ever to be minted in the U.S. Because they were so small many people found these coins very easy to lose, and they were a strange denomination so these coins were never very popular for daily use, but they make a fun collectible!
