Today’s coin of the day is this 1856 Braided Hair Large Cent.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Braided Hair Large Cent was minted from 1839 to 1857 and features a depiction of Liberty wearing a crown inscribed with the words “LIBERTY” and is encircled by 13 stars representing the thirteen original colonies. The reverse is inscribed with the words, “ONE CENT” encircled by a wreath, as well as the words, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” While collectors today love large cents, the public opinion of this series of coins was rather poor while they were still being minted and in circulation. Often it was described as having “Liberty in a fright,” or many other worse names such as “Fat Mistress.”
This particular coin is in XF condition with a rich beautiful tone, and is a beautiful example of an 1856 Braided Hair Large Cent.
