Lunchboxes have been around so long that it is weird to think that there was a time they weren’t necessary. Before the industrial revolution, most people worked in or very close to their homes and were able to have lunch at home every day, but as industry grew, more and more people worked in factories and it was no longer feasible to go home for lunch, therefore the lunchbox was created, as well as the thermos a number of years later.
The first patents for lunchboxes appeared around the 1860’s, but the first licensed character lunchbox appeared in 1935 which featured Mickey Mouse, and later in 1950, the first lunchbox marketed towards children was created by Aladdin Industries.
Because Television was experiencing such explosive growth in this time period, manufacturers saw an opportunity to really capitalize on famous characters and lunchboxes featuring famous shows and movies became all the rage!
