While the half dollar isn’t a coin that is used very often anymore there are still quite a few Kennedy half dollars floating around out there, and they are still being made. They aren’t very common in pocket change, but you can still go to the bank and pick up a roll or two.
This coin was first minted in 1964, just a few short months after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, as a way for the nation to pay their respects to him.
The Kennedy half dollar is an interesting coin because depending on the year it was made, the metallurgical makeup of the coin is different, and that is why you have to keep an eye out for this coin.
Next time you see a Kennedy half dollar, make sure to check the date. Because, if it is dated 1964, your 50 cent coin just went up quite a bit in value as it is made of 90% silver. From 1965 to 1970 the coin was clad with 40% silver (these 40% silver coins need to be uncirculated to have much value.) Then, starting in 1971, silver was no longer used. This makes the circulated coins from 1971 and later worth only the face value of the coin.
