In the mid-1960’s The U.S. Mint discovered that it had been holding onto millions of silver dollars. This led to GSA auctioning of these coins starting in 1973 and going until 1980 to the public. They sold about 28,000 uncirculated, and approximately 100,000 circulated silver dollars.
Unlike the uncirculated coins, the circulated coins were put in a soft plastic sleeve along with a plastic token giving some information about the coin.
The plastic “pack” was made out of special materials and sealed all the way around to keep the coin safe from the usual wear and tear of coins and other environmental damage. The coins were then put inside a blue envelope.
