The Morgan Dollar is a silver dollar that was minted by the United States mint from 1878–1904 and then made a reappearance for one year in 1921. The design of the coin features a bust of Liberty on the obverse and an eagle with out-stretched wings on the reverse.
The Morgan Dollar was designed by U.S. mints assistant engraver, George T. Morgan, hence the name, Morgan Dollar.
Morgan used Anna Willess Williams as the model for the bust of Liberty, claiming that he wanted the depiction of Liberty to be based on an American woman rather than the usual Greek style that was used for Liberty.
Morgan’s design for Liberty was put against Chief Mint Engraver William Barber’s, who Morgan was working under, for the design of the coin. The deciding vote went to the director of the mint, Henry Richard Linderman who decided that Morgan’s design was perfect for the coin.
