Posted by Megan Banks on 5/26/2012 to Learning Center
Turquoise has been a prized opaque mineral that has been treasured for thousands of years. Turquoise is used in jewelry from all around the world. Turquoise is most popular in Southwestern and Native American Jewelry. Good Ole Tom’s has many beautiful pieces of turquoise jewelry.

Turquoise got its name from “Turkish”, because it was brought to Europe first from Turkey from the Khorasan Province. Turquoise was among one of the first minerals to be mined, and still currently is mined today. The Southwest United States is a big producer of Turquoise. Turquoise is mined in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada, with Arizona being the most important producer by value. The Sleeping Beauty Mine and Kingman mine are said to produce the best turquoise because of their unique color and quality.

Many different varieties can be found of turquoise and it really depends on individual tastes. Some people prefer “robins egg” turquoise which look the color of an American Robin’s egg. Also, turquoise with a web like design with splotches of brown or black veins.

Look over the pieces of jewelry we have at Good Ole Toms and see the different varieties of beautiful turquoise.
